They say that the perfect heel is created when the average ham and egger in the crowd believes they can beat him, but somehow the heel in question manages to get away without losing. If that is true then The Honky Tonk Man is probably the best heel ever wrestled, He wasn't fast, strong or technically the best wrestler, but he held the WWE Intercontinental Championsip for 64 weeks in an era when he was competing against the likes of Hitman, Perfect, Warrior, Macho Man and Rude for the title, a championship run never before and never likely to be beaten. But the wrestling journey for Roy Wayne Farris started nearly 40 years before his Slenderslam appearance, when he and training partner, and fellow Slenderslam 8 contestant, Koko B Ware began wrestling in Missouri, but it was another 5 years before the Honky Tonk Man was born. In 1989 Honky formed an alliance with Greg 'The Hammer' Valentine, the Rhythm and Blues, and after they were part of the winning Survivor Series team in 1990, that defeated Bret Hart and Koko , the formiddable musical wrestlers vowed to take the trip to Slenderslam together and hold hands at The Waterloo Arms. However when schizophrenia took hold of Greg in 1992 and he started to refer to himself as 'The Hogg' they parted ways. But both men are, if nothing else men of their word, and on a hot July in 2016 both men did indeed make that trip to Shirley.

Although Greg travelled alone, Honky did not make the trip from Tennessee to Shirley on his lonesome. He came with a young lady on his arm, Peggy Sue. Much like many of the wrestlers form the Mid-West, Honky liked to be accompanied by a questionably young woman and Peggy was very young. In fact Mitch Sizemore commented in his book 'Wrestling Nonce's' that the Honky Tonk Man could not get a audible chord out of his guitar when they met, but with young Peggy on his arm, he might get to strum A Minor.Perhaps slightly unfair when you see hear his double Platinum track 'Honk Tonk Man' and it was no coincidence that Honky chose to wear this famous Black and Blue jumpsuit from the Piledriver album to Slenderslam 8 to remind everyone of why he was there. Honky had hoped to use the event as a vehicle to increase his sales of his new album 'Hunka Hunka Hunka Hunka burning love', which was a follow up to his previous album, 'Hunka Hunka Hunka burning love', Sadly though things turned sour at the event when it would appear Ginger McMahon had yet again made promises of a cheque that he was not prepared to cash, the news of which reached Honky mid promo, leaving Honky and young Peggy high and dry. We then saw the real side of the self professed 'sideburn king' as things turned nasty and it took all of Sizemore's resolve to maintain decorum and stop things spilling over. On a plus side though we did see the Rhythm and Blues put their differences of the last 25 years behind them and have an embrace as Honky made a beeline for Valentine when arriving on stage, although Honky being Honky it was via the beautiful Sapphire, who rumour has it, later that day, got to try out the back of Honky's pink Cadillac.
Post Slenderslam
Honky Tonk Man remains in a lawsuit battle with Ginger McMahon over his image rights with the Waterloo Wrestling Federation, outstanding fees claimed by Honky for his appearance at the event are still in dispute.McMahon countered this with his own suit, claiming that Hunka Hunka Burning love was a cover of his original 1987 single 'Funky Funky Hairy Glove'. McMahon refused to comment but did add 'There's no 'i' in appearance fee, but there is an 'ip' in Paedophile'. Classy Ginger, real classy
